With the renovation of the Museum of Fine Arts beginning in 2015, the various collections once on display in the imposing edifice will find temporary homes in other galleries. For the next two and a half years, Vaszary Gallery will house Austrian Biedermeier paintings selected from the museum’s exceptionally vast collection.
The visual arts style Biedermeier became fashionable in Central Europe in the first half of the 19th century. The ambitious bourgeoisie strove to build an environment where interiors were much more comfortable than before. Portraits, genre art and still lifes were the characteristic painting genres of the time. As an expression of bourgeois consciousness, walls were adorned with peaceful scenes of everyday life.
The exhibition includes the paintings of Friedrich von Amerling, Johann Nepomuk Ender, Franz Eybl, Friedrich Gauermann, August von Pettenkofen, Johann Baptist Reiter and Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller.
