In 2003 Gábor Szatmári fell in love with Szigliget, and bought a wine cellar on Antal Hill, situated between Balaton and the castle. Like many other cellars around Balaton, this one started as a hobby: today the winery covers five hectares, and only works with native Hungarian grapes grown on their own vineyards. Vulcanus is an emblematic wine of Szatmári; it’s named after the volcanic soil that gives the vintage its minerally flavor. The semi-sparkling cuvée Mámor is worth trying as well.
Here’s a top tip: The winery doesn’t offer accommodation, but wine tastings are often held for up to six people. While you’re busy admiring the panorama of Szigliget and enjoying a few glasses of excellent Riesling, dinner is prepared in the oven or over the open fire.
