An interesting marriage – that’s what many people thought when they heard the news that BRKLYN, a popular spot on Budapest’s nightlife-map, will move in with Malackrumpli, a place known for its bio-meals and homely atmosphere. The two worlds collided in Kisfaludy Street in Balatonfüred, resulting in cocktails, electronic music, and hundreds of light bulbs.

Kisfaludy Street was already pretty much alive with restaurants lining up on it. It’s not far from Tagore Promenade, but it’s far enough for loosing Lake Balaton out if sight – we can only imagine seeing it. One of our favorite streets of Balatonfüred runs on its other side: it’s Blaha Lujza Street, famous for its unique restaurants.

BRKLYN & Malackrumpli evokes retro vibes, and with its angular shapes, huge size, and name, it is rather different than the other, old buildings of the Reform-era quarter, but this will stay like this from now on, as the former confectionery, now club, is a monument building. “The historic part of town has deep cultural connections. This is why we’re happy to be here. We don’t want to smash the house. We’ll let the guests decide whether we fit in this environment or not. We won’t do anything radical, we won’t blast techno at five in the morning. We’re cultured people,” said Áron Reményik, the marketing and communications manager of BRKLYN.

BRKLYN for some, Malackrumpli for others

The BRKLYN & Malackrumpli sign glows from afar. They wanted a simple, easily interpreted name for their “child”, and we really can’t accuse them with over-thinking it. But how will people call them in a year? “They’ll probably shorten it, and some will call it BRKLYN, while others will call it Malackrumpli,” answered Norbert Mancza, BRKLYN’s manager. “Both brands have their own audience, and they probably come in during different times of the day. BRKLYN’s audience will be here from Friday from Monday.”

Our audience will probably consist of people from Budapest who have a holiday home or a sailboat in Balatonfüred, or who just simply come to town often. People who haven’t found a place where they could have cocktails and fun with their friends,” explains Norbert. These people will find the subway tiles, the bulb-lit letters, the quotes, the screening on the wall, and the couch familiar. “The rhythm is different here: people come to relax in Balatonfüred, they eat, drink, then go home around 2-3 in the morning – that’s totally different in Budapest,” he explains.

We think that the new place channels Balatonfüred through its white, yellow, and blue tables and benches, the local wines, and, of course, through Malackrumpli’s name.

Balatonfüred and Tihany are different

Earlier they were talking about moving Malackrumpli here from the edge of Balatonfüred, but they decided to have their own place in Tihany. The menu is simple, it only has nine items, however, they cost a bit more than street food usually does. Still, for those typical Malackrumpli courses it's best to visit their Tihany unit.

You can eat, among others, fish and chips (2,690 HUF), BBQ rib burger (3,690 HUF), or fried pork chops (3,490 HUF), and Caesar salad (1,990 HUF). The chef was trained at Malackrumpli, the executive chef, Jacek Luzsa comes over from Tihany with the owner, Tamás Járosi numerous times a week to see if everything’s working fine.
