Balaton Piknik, part of the MOL Nagyon Balaton event series, is taking place this weekend, 13-14 September. Headliners are Morcheeba and Róisín Murphy, with a strong gastro selection provided by Balatoni Kör. The location is both iconic and unusual: the grounds around the Gömbkilátó observation globe in Balatonboglár.

From noon tomorrow, Friday 13 September, the two-day Balaton Piknik festival spreads out around the huge Gömbkilátó observation globe in Balatonboglár. Bringing together a great line-up, the VOLT Produkció team behind the MOL Nagyon Balaton event series should attract a lively crowd and encourage people to lakeside happenings all year round.

London trip-hoppers Morcheeba return to Hungary as part of a huge European tour that takes in Glasto, Secret Solstice in Reykjavik and the Dürer Kert in Budapest. Also appearing are electropop queen Róisín Murphy and Nicola Conte & Spiritual Galaxy, whose music mixes African rhythms with Indian folk and more.

Legendary DJ Gilles Peterson is another scheduled guest, along with bossa nova singer Bebel Gilberto, and folk-rocker José González. Nubiyan Twist and Maestro, a DJ who turns jazz classics to dance floor hits, will also entertain festivalgoers.

Organisers are keen to keep things as intimate as possible, limiting numbers for the two-day picnic. The team at local wine and gastro association Balatoni Kör is on board while the host of the VIP terrace will be Kistücsök, one of the country’s best restaurants.
