A revered place with a good reputation should sometimes not be tampered with, so the folk behind the Fügekert in Zánka have converted a completely new building, once a small pub in the village. New rooms, a spa and a communal area now await guests.
On previous visits to the Fügekert Bed & Wine at the gateway to Káli-medence, we found it to be one of the best and most popular places in the area. For 2020, it has been thoroughly renovated, and the brand new wing of the complex, Fügekert 2.0 has just been unveiled.
The concept remains: familial atmosphere, friendly hospitality, child- and family-friendly services, vintage Balaton Uplands but clean design in the one package, all complemented by new features.
In the new wing, six rooms have been created, and new room types have appeared: a two-room Deluxe family suite where parents and children can sleep separately, three Superior double rooms, a Deluxe double room with a romantic free-standing bath and a panoramic view of Lake Balaton, as well as a Superior triple-bed bicycle room.
The new building at Fügekert once served as the pub, fish shop and later inn of the village, and is one of the most polished buildings in Zánka. On the ground floor, around the lobby, an enclosed communal area and breakfast room have been set up so that they can receive guests even in winter. If the cold has already set in, a spa area with a Finnish sauna and jacuzzi have also been installed.
Ideal for relaxing mornings, breakfast can also be taken on the atmospheric terrace. Here, hand-crafted sit-down dishes are created from artisanal delicacies produced locally, and not just with hotel guests in mind.
As for the end product, whose handiwork should we praise? The Konkrét Stúdió took part in the design, while architects Csaba Balogh and Ágnes Vértesy helped to realise the ideas of the owners, Tímea Bana and Miklós Havas.
The essence of the concept was to maintain the well-known image of Fügekert, but also to carry out a complete renovation – meeting the requirements of the 21st century but retaining the ancient character and atmosphere of the building. It seems they have carried it off splendidly.
