The peculiar “old cemetery” is found on the top of the hill towering over the Zamárdi town center, with the Chapel of Heroes standing on the edge. The chapel is the resting place of Zamárdi’s inhabitants that have perished in various wars. The façade of the Byzantine style chapel features Christ calling the deceased to himself. Like in a Marquez novel, in the graves nearby lie colonels and captains who were relocated from Budapest after WWII and lived in Zamárdi until their death. The easiest way of reaching the cemetery is to take the steep and romantic footpath leading up from the tire service station opposite the train stop. In the building standing 100 m from the chapel, visitors can view a horse drawn hearse that could be straight out of a Tim Burton movie.
