There are a couple of places around Balaton where you can grab delicious marrow on toast: Hatlépcsős in Füred is one, and there's also Gyulakeszi Car Rest Stop, which our gourmet expert Zoli Szabó swears by.

We suggest you try the version with cheese first, but the trotters with horseradish, the fried liverwurst, and the Debrecener are quite excellent as well. This place is a marketing executive’s sweetest dream: it’s almost always packed, even though the owners say they haven’t spent a penny on marketing since they opened their business in 1992.

It’s not only those vacationing at Balaton who frequent the rest stop; young people from Győr, Veszprém, and even Budapest are among the regular visitors.
