Standing on the 225 m dolomite called Vas-hegy, the Kitaibel Lookout Tower overlooks Vonyarcvashegy and the Keszthely Basin. The three-storey tower, named after Hungary’s Linnaeus, has stood at the disposal of hikers since 2002. It is also one of the resting stations of the hiking trail linking the Festetics and Berzsenyi Lookout Towers.

The last stretch of the path leading up to the tower from the train station in Vonyarc is the equivalent of a 30-minute cardio training, especially if at first you miss the faded green triangle signs. As a consolation prize, you can listen to the crickets, the cicadas of Lake Balaton, chirping in the planted Mediterranean black pine forest surrounding the construction.
