The oldest Gothic mansion of Alsóörs was constructed at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. Its name was allegedly inspired by its turban-shaped chimney, which in fact is a Baroque style chimney top reminiscent of the shape of an onion. Official records suggest that it was a group of Turkish magistrates responsible for collecting tax for the Turkish Empire that had the house built, and they were also its original residents – that is apparently where the name “Turkish House” comes from. The building was erected on the most scenic plot in town, so from here visitors can admire the entire eastern basin of Lake Balaton. Apart from a permanent exhibition, the house is a popular venue for culture events in the summertime.
