The view that greets you from Szépkilátó in Balatongyörök is incredible, making it one of the best vantage points at Lake Balaton.

Szépkilátó, on the edge of Balatongyörök, was named by politician Károly Eötvös in 1855. The name refers to the 'beautiful view' that welcomes you here: Badacsony towers right in front of you, but Szent György-hegy, Csobánc, Gulács, Tóti-hegy, Haláp and, in good weather, even Somló, Kis-Somló and Ság-hegy are visible, not to mention Szigliget Castle and the hills of Fonyód.

Standing 140 metres above sea level, Szépkilátó is free to visit. There’s a car park, benches and the Balaton Bike Ring passes nearby. It’s beautiful year-round. Szépkilátó also has an interesting history: the remains of a Roman villa from the 2nd century were found at the foot of the hill. Later, in medieval times, a monastery of the Dominican Order stood here, while the pines were planted by the wife of Count Tasziló Festetics, Lady Maria Hamilton. If you want to grab a bite, the Csóka Fészek restaurant is close, while you can pop into the Promenád Café for coffee and cake.

To reach it, turn into the car park between the 94 and 95 kilometre stones on Main Road 71.
