Deák Mansion and Museum

Sights & Culture - Museums & Exhibition halls

Ironically, it is the town of Söjtör 40 km away that has gone down in history as the birthplace of Ferenc Deák, but it is worth noting that he only spent a few days here – his real home  for almost 50 years was the Deák Mansion, located in Kehidakustány, where the main PR agent of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise lived until he moved to the capital in 1854.

Visitors to the recently renovated castle are transported back in time, as this was the venue of the most important political summits of the 19th century, and here is where renowned politicians like Kossuth, Wesselényi or even Vörösmarty used to sit around debating with pipes in their mouths.

You can also learn about the private life of the prominent politician, as his famous pipe collection, his letters and other knick-knacks are part of the permanent exhibition titled The wise man of the nation, the pride of Zala County.
