Old Lavender Field

Sights & Culture - Sights

The only place most Hungarians see lush lavender fields is on computer desktops and tacky book covers, so it is hardly surprising that the Old Lavender Field of Tihany is somewhat of a hidden Hungarian gem.

Sprawled out between Csúcs-hegy and Apát-hegy, the lavender field has run a little wild in recent years, and most of the original lavender plants have died out, so the lavender rows clearly visible on 1920s postcards are no longer there.

Nevertheless, if you stroll along the Lóczy Lajos hiking trail amid a romantic landscape of almond trees during blooming season, you can smell how beautifully fragrant this purple-coloured Mediterranean subshrub is.
