Round Church

Sights & Culture - Sights

Reminiscent of Rome’s iconic Pantheon, the name of the Round Church (Kerektemplom) was inspired by the dome and the shape of the building itself.

The refined edifice quickly became an emblem of Balatonfüred, and today it adorns almost every souvenir item you can find in the charming Balaton town. In the mid-18th century, visitors enjoying the benefits of the local thermal waters requested that a chapel be built in the lakeside resort, but construction didn’t begin until 1841.

The classical building was erected over a period of five years based on the plans of Antal Fruhman. The painting above the main altar was created by Austrian painter Henriette Kärling, whereas the picture titled “Christ on the Cross” was painted by János Vaszary.
