Ruins of Szent András Church

Sights & Culture - Sights

Some man-made structures are literally indestructible: one of them is the set of ruins of Szent András Church. The ruins are located by the side of the road, about 900 m from the centre of Taliándörögd, and visiting them is like taking a journey through time.

The history of the religious site goes back to the era of the Árpád dynasty: the church was transformed in the 14th century, and was destroyed during the Turkish invasion; what remained was blown up in the 1840s. Despite all the turmoil, the vestry is still standing and fragments of its spiral stairs and its medieval frescos are visible to this day.

The building is not only interesting for art historians and hikers: the ruins and its surroundings regularly serve as the backdrop of summer evening concerts.
