Saint Ladislaus National Memorial

Sights & Culture - Sights

Founded by Ladislaus I of Hungary, the Benedictine Abbey of Somogyvár was the largest abbey in medieval Hungary. As the seat of its county it was also a pillar of state administration. The nearby visitor centre is just outside Somogyvár, next to the road: here you can buy tickets and access the ruin garden.

The interactive exhibition of Saint Ladislaus National Memorial is shows the abbey’s construction and the legends associated with Saint Ladislaus – it’s best so start your excursion here. Then you can reach the beautiful ruins of the abbey and the lookout tower next to it after a short hike in the forest with more than three hundred steps to climb.

Tip: Turn off expressway M7 at the Fonyód exit and drive through Somogyvár to reach the memorial. Signs will show you the direction to the visitor centre and the ruins.
