The 2014 edition of the popular Gault & Millau restaurant guide was published recently. The annual distribution of chef hats has also gained importance in Hungary, as the editors can now pick from a range of restaurants of increasingly good quality.
Gault & Millau, however, does not only evaluate and recommend restaurants in its guide book, but wineries and hotels as well. After the TripAdvisor top list, here are the best hotels at and near Lake Balaton--according to Gault & Millau. Half of the ten best hotels of Transdanubia is in the catchment area of Balaton. It's no wonder that the Hertelendy Castle in Kozmapuszta won this category–not many castle hotels in Hungary can boast with having both a gourmet restaurant and an airport at the same time. The silver went to the little brother of the Hertelendy Castle, Chateau Visz near Balatonlelle. Here, you will not find an airport--and hardly any mobile coverage--, but the gourmet restaurant constantly ends up on the lists of the best Hungarian restaurants.
The 5th place among the best hotels of Transdanubia went to the venue of the renowned Anna Ball, the Anna Grand Hotel in Balatonfüred. They were joined by the one and only 5-star hotel of Hévíz, the Lotus Therme and the Villa Medici of Veszprém in the top 10. The latter has two restaurants, one of them had already been recognised by Gault & Millau.
