Anglers and cyclists will also benefit from the new marina in Vonyarcvashegy

Balatongyörök dismissed the idea, but Vonyarcvashegy was eager to jump at the opportunity of having its own marina. The facility brought to life from 231 million HUF in subsidies and the same amount of own contribution is being constructed at record speed. The dredgers have been working hard dredging the bottom of the lake by the shore adjacent to Lido Beach, which had been a public beach and an angling area. The sale of berths and future bungalows is already under way. According to the schedule, the club house and the marina capable of mooring up to 97 boats over 40 ft will be finished by the end of June.Afterwards, the construction of the winterized wooden bungalows will begin, parallel to that of the sandy beach, and the investor also promised to built a restaurant that will have a wide wine range, dishes also for take away and 10 berths in front of the terrace. We reached Károly Péter on the phone, and the mayor confirmed that the facility does not endanger the reeds of the shoreline. He explained that since the original plans would have touched the reeds of the area, after thorough consultation with experts, a new concept was established in cooperation with the investor, which doesn't harm local wildlife. The designs show a major cut in the northwestern corner of the marina, which serves to preserve the existing reeds.

The mayor also explained that he personally lobbied for the establishment of the marina in Vonyarcvashegy, after it had been vetoed by the residents' forum in Balatongyörök. Although the marina in Vonyarcvashegy will be the 75th around Lake Balaton, and there is the recently renewed Főnix sailboat marina of Keszthely a few kilometres away, the mayor believes there is major demand for a new facility, since the Balaton has only a few places where the bay is deep enough for larger boats to enter and moor. The marina of Vonyarcvashegy will be compatible with them. The option of establishing a marina on the 800-metre section of the shoreline stretching towards Gyenesdiás from the beach has been open thanks to the Lake's regulatory plan since 2002. The desire to transform this slightly neglected piece of shore has long been there, but the private capital entered the picture only recently.

Parallel to this, the local government of Vonyarcvashegy is also busy with plans. They want to set up a bicycle rest point by the entrance of the marina, for which they will apply for subsidy in April. The service point that is right by the Balaton Bike Ring will have a bike repair station, a bar and showers to accommodate tired cyclists. The local government also plans to create a direct, lit promenade from the centre to the marina. Anglers need not worry: the promenade will have angling spaces and storage.
