A former military radio station is now a popular destination for hikers. The Gáspár Noszlopy lookout tower on Recsek-hegy has a view of Balaton from Várpalota to Fonyód.
The 431-metre-high Gáspár Noszlopy Lookout Tower atop Recsek-hegy was built in 1963. It towers above the trees, providing a sweeping vista of almost the entire eastern basin of Lake Balaton. Nearby fire pits and comfortable benches also feature. The area is rich in rare and protected plants.
The tower was named after Commander Gáspár Noszlopy, referred to as “the bravest man of the 19th century” by Hungarian statesman Lajos Kossuth for recruiting troops even after the Hungarian Revolution of 1849-49 was crushed.
To reach it, you have to follow one of the hiking trails that lead here from Hidegkút, Balatonfüred or Veszprémfajsz. There’s no entry fee and the lookout tower is open all year round.
