Many believe that the best view of Lake Balaton can be observed from Szigliget Castle, with the lake to the south and the fields and hills of Tapolca to the north. It was built by the Benedictine monastery at Tihany following the Mongol invasion of the 13th century and has been standing for more than 400 years.
During the complex renewal of 2013, new walls, roofs and towers were built, new observation points, a blacksmith’s workshop and a chapel were added. The castle is a great place to visit even when the weather is bad, but it’s best to come when it’s all clear. That’s when you can enjoy the best view of the famous hills of Tapolcai-medence and half of Lake Balaton.
To reach it, turn off Main Road 71 at Szigliget then follow the signs. You can leave your car at the car park next to Öregfalu Church and then follow the cobblestoned road to the castle.
