Original members of UB40, Ali Campbell and Astro, are celebrating the band’s 40th anniversary with an ongoing tour. Over four decades, they have released 18 albums, sold over 70 million records and bagged four Grammy nominations.
Formed in Birmingham in 1978, the band with English, Scottish, Irish, Yemeni and Jamaican roots quickly conquered the UK charts with their light pop-reggae tunes. Their 1983 album, Labour of Love brought international success.
Their cover of Neil Diamond’s 1967 song, Red Red Wine was then a global smash.
Singer Ali Campbell and keyboardist Mickey Virtue left the band in 2008, followed by singer-trumpeter Astro. Since then, they have released more albums and toured under the name UB40 featuring Ali, Astro and Mickey. The remaining five members operate under the name of UB40 with singer Duncan Campbell.
