A mere ten minutes by car from Lake Balaton, there is a huge fenced plot in Kápolnapuszta dedicated exclusively to providing a peaceful home to and maintaining the genetic heritage of Hungary’s native buffaloes.

Walk the 1.5-km interactive educational buffalo trail and learn almost everything about the eating and breeding habits as well as the behaviour of these 700-kg animals. During the tour you can learn that these animals bear an eerie resemblance to holidaymakers at Lake Balaton: when they see water they are absolutely reluctant to work, and in the summer they spend as much as 4-5 hours wallowing in the mud without the slightest sign of remorse.

Along your journey down the trail, stop to study the numerous buffalo herds from various observation points: through binoculars, from a deer stand or up close, from behind a wire fence.
