Lajos Kunffy, a friend of Mihály Munkácsy, created works in many styles, including Academism, Art Nouveau, Naturalism and Impressionism. The painter’s many other roles included being a cultural diplomat and a grandfather residing in Somogy.

His house in Somogytúr was transformed into a museum during his lifetime. The exhibition is inside the mansion that was refurbished a few years ago and in the studio building next to it. It gives you a glimpse into the artist’s works from the beginning to his masterpieces. His pictures, showing the local gypsy community brought him his international breakthrough after he exhibited them in Paris early in the previous century.

Tip: Many painters were born in Somogy County. If you are interested in them, visit the memorial houses of Rippl-Rónai in Kaposvár and Mihály Zichy in Zala, or see the birth home of Gyula Rudnay in Bábonymegyer. There’s also the Csók István Memorial Museum in Cece. There are also many contemporary artists who often work in the creative camp of Túr.
