The Castle of Szigliget is the best known, but not the only ruin in the lakeside town. The former Óvár (Hungarian for “ancient castle”) used to stand on top of the cone-shaped monadnock Királyné szoknyája ("Queen’s skirt"), but all that is left of the once impressive edifice today is a couple of mossy stone blocks. The castle was presumably erected in the 13th century, but its exact time of construction remains a mystery. The wooden tower was built on the ruins in 2013 to enhance the already stunning view of Lake Balaton.

Here’s a top tip: There’s a parking lot at the bottom of the trail leading to the tower, which is easy to access by car from the local beach. The walking path is quite steep at times, but don’t let that discourage you: you don’t need to be a mountaineer to reach the top.
