Wine, Blues, pig blood – Veszprém
The Veszprém Wine-Blues-Butchers Days bridge the gap between the afro-american blues musicians of the Mississipi delta and the Hungarians running after pigs way too early in the morning, for the second time. The programme begins in the aternoon of 7 March with a concert by the Takács Tamás Blues Band. The pig meets its fate in the next morning, while Sunday will witness a greaves and cake making competition. Entertainment during the processing of pork meat will be provided by storyteller András Berecz among others. The pig slaughter accompanied by music will take place in the reborn Veszprémvölgy.
Quimby Theatre– Veszprém
The renowned Hungarian band Quimby will play in the Hangvilla (Veszprém) on Saturday, 8 March. The band will flash its theatrical face with "ethereal tunes", monologues and perfromance acts. Prepare for a Broadway show instead of beer-sloshing booty shaking!
The attraction of Tihany - Tihany
Miklós Borsos was one of the most prominent Hungarian sculptors of the 20th century, who was either making sculptures in Budapest or spending his holiday in Tihany. Nearly 50 years of holidays in Tihany did not leave his work uninspired. It is by no means an accident that the permanent exhibition of the Tihany branch of the Budapest-based Kogart contemporary collection, which was opened in 2013, displays a selection of the works by the master – with the title 'The Attraction of Tihany'. The exhibition is open on weekends.
Market - Szántódpuszta
We did not have a clearly Balaton-specific trend since the monokini in the 1990ies up to now. The surge of farmgate markets have produced such iconic places as the Liliomkert of Káptalantóti and the Piac Market of Tihany. You will also find a weekend farmers' and flea market a few kilometres from the port of Tihany in the direction of the ferry, at the Szántódpuszta Culture Centre.
The Castle of Balaton, renewed - Szigliget
The Balaton used to be surrounded by mostly wooden or mud fortiffications, so there is hardly anything left for today's castle-fans to admire. The Castle of Szigliget is an exception so probably the majority of Hungarians have already visited it on field trips. It is worthwile to return now: the "Castle of Balaton" underwent major renovation in 2013. Not only the remaining stone walls were heightened, but they have added reconstructed attractions to the site, from cannons to a smithy. There are also interactive equipments in the Tanítóház at the bottom of the Castle, which make the castle accessible for the phisically impaired as well.
Beyond the Abbey - Tihany
Tihany is not just the Tihany Abbey. On 9 March, you can explore all beyond the Abbey, guided by locals. In addition to the guided tours, the entry to the local open-air folk museum will also be free. Check out the farmer's house and the fishermen's guild house to get an idea what it all looked like in the ages before tourism.
Photos of the Kis-Balaton - Keszthely
Kis-Balaton is a must-see. You must lose yourself in its swamps, among herons, reeds, fishers and buildings constructed and destructed in different ages. It might not be the real thing, but the temporary exhibition of the photos of Kis-Balaton from the past 50 years at the Balaton Museum in Keszthely is a great appetizer.
