'The first so-called "disco boat" of the Balaton ran on the Szántód-Tihany ferry line around 1970. Several bands of the era performed aboard. I saw one of the concerts of my one-time favourite, Non Stop. It was fun. There was enough room, there were a lot of us,' writes someone with hazy eyes in an internet forum.
The disco boat was at least as popular in the summers of the 1970ies and '80ies as girls from East Germany or the Taurus inflatable beach matress. The Beloiannisz ship, a venue for the concerts of crowd favourites like Omega and the ultimate floating party place was as famous in Hungary as the Beatles worldwide.
Since then, East German girls have grown up and now they are housewives in their fifties, driving Mercedes hatchbacks in Sachsen-Anhalt, while the Beloiannisz has been slowly eaten up by rust. It set out on its final journey recently and left the Balaton for good. There are disco boats still, but without today's top of the pops.
We Love Balaton now revives the classic live music coctail boat for one night only. Join us at the port of Balatonföldvár on the evening of 10 May (Saturday)! The entertainment aboard is guaranteed by the favourite of Petőfi Radio, the band called Bermuda, who are now introducing their new song after the success of Monte Carlo and London. After the concert, HOLALO Djs will spin the best disco hits.
