The most laid-back locale of Lake Balaton’s North Shore is now open at Ábrahámhegy, enticing visitors with bohemian Mexican meals and ice-cold beer, and for all that you don't even have to pay your last peso.
Ábrahámhegy has never really been famous for its lively vibes or outstanding locales, but after the launch of Ábrahám Teázó, a new eatery, Átjáró Grill, also opened in mid-June, which might mark this place on the map of all gastro fans. Balázs Szász and his team could not have chosen a better spot; the eatery is found between Pataki Street and Road 71, so if you’re just on your way down to the beach you can always take a shortcut through Átjáró Grill (transl. Trespassing Grill). Szász says that trespassing through their place without buying anything is totally fine, so they are definitely true to their name.
Szász gained lots of experience in hospitality working in pubs, and he became truly interested in gastronomy while working at Ellátó in Budapest. He learned to make a few basic meals, and decided to open Átjáró Grill with his friend Gyurma. Why Mexican? Because of the spices. As the concept cleared out they started working very hard in the beginning of the summer; they refurbished the run-down house and garden. They intentionally opened the new eatery on June 14th for the Euro 2016 Football Championship, and they even built a grandstand for the special occasion, the "stadium" as Szász calls it, which is green and white to honor his favorite Hungarian football team. We have visited this place many times since the opening, and we were never disappointed in the dishes or in the atmosphere.
Szász, a really cool former skateboarder, attracts truly extreme figures to Átjáró Grill, while he says families also love this place, where guests can devour delicious tacos and quesadillas amid an amazing atmosphere. Balázs Szász says he would never give bad food to his guests, and we agree with this. We tried their chicken, and beef quesadillas, which cost between 980 -1,180 HUF depending on the filling, and we had no complaints at all; the seasoning was perfect, and the meat and dough were cooked crispy (the only thing they could improve is the delicate plastic tableware). "They would truly die for an avocado-crème cheese wrap” – said Szász guiding us into the world of the 980 HUF wonders of Mexican cuisine. We can also buy a whole grilled chicken for 2,000 HUF, and chili con carne for 1,250 HUF, but the tacos are the cheapest, they cost between 480-680 HUF.
