Bázakerettye, a village of barely a thousand residents is an ideal place to hide from the world, and although it’s a bit further away from Lake Balaton, it’s a nice detour to take if you're already in the area. A narrow-gauge railway that visits seven villages operates here and the tiny restaurant and hotel of Zala is also here, on the edge of hundreds of acres of a forest.

The owner of Bonne Chance restaurant has a goal no less than to only use locally sourced ingredients. They use their own herbs, and the pickled goods on the tables were fermented in barrels.

Tip: We dare to say that the best schnitzel of the country is made here near the Austrian border, but their yogurt and homemade pickles soup is also a revelation, just like the rethought local sweet treat, the Zala-bar.
