Fonyód and its surroundings have many a spot called 'vár' (castle, fort), but it is Fácános (meaning something to do with pheasants) that gives the most insight into what went on here when people were engrossed in fighting instead of sunbathing by Lake Balaton.
Fácános was a simple palisade, which the Turks destroyed - the only surviving parts are the ditches and foundations of the former church that used to stand in the center. A jungle of weeds has since sprung up at the location of the palisade named after the pheasants that lived in the area. Posterity, however, was grateful enough to restore the site and rebuild some of the walls and the towers.
To visit Fácános, you don't even have to leave town and venture into the wild: it only takes a walk from the centre of Fonyód to reach the palisade park in Szent István utca. The Fonyódi Hadijátékok (Fonyód Battle Games), where participants dress up in costumes and don swords, are organized here every summer in remembrance of the site's history.
