Károly Csibrák, the namesake of Halas Karcsi has been frying fish in Zamárdi for the past three decades. The classic, retro fish grill, which traditionally opens around Pentecost, only sells freshly made bighead carp, bream and zander; what is more, customers can choose their victims themselves. Some of the special dishes of the eatery include whole fried Volga zander and fried milt, but you can also order spit-roasted pork cutlets called cigánypecsenye, fried pork chops or pancakes if you don’t like fish on your plate.

As this place is regarded as one of the best fish grills, it comes as no surprise that customers sometimes have to wait in line for more than 30 minutes. Don’t worry: you can pass the time by downing a few glasses of fröccs or beer, or by chatting to Halas Karcsi about some of his most famous anecdotes.
