The church that once stood on the present-day site of the Margaret ruins was built around 1240 for a group of nuns of the Dominican Order. The building was named in honor of Saint Margaret of Hungary, who spent six years at the local convent.

Destroyed during the invasion of the Turks, the church's ruins were excavated in 1938, and reconstructed during the renovation of nearby Veszprémvölgy. That is when Margaret tér and the fountain adorning its center were created.

Tip: If you want to incorporate the ruins into your sightseeing tour of Veszprém, follow the route of the creek Séd from the stairs by the Cathedral Basilica of St Michael. Click here to take a look around the ruins.
