There are better and better places on Balaton’s south shore to sample hot dogs, burgers, fish, cake or ice cream – plus ever more places where you can pay contactless for them with safety and ease. Here are five suggestions for great destinations to tuck in and tap out.

In our two previous episodes, you could discover places around Lake Balaton offering quality cuisine, where Hungarian gastro blogger Fördős Zé has also turned up, and where you can pay with your card or with a mobile wallet as your phone is always in your pocket. In our third and final episode, here are five more locations, all on the south shore.

Spéci Hotdog & Krumpli

Recently awarded with the Discovery of the Year at the annual Beach Food awards, Spéci serves up its signature Balatonlelle pork sausage creation and flawless, filling and finely crafted fried potatoes.

Tejvirág

Viktor Buzsics has put together a super ice-cream parlour, where you can sample a raspberry-chili ice cream creation, aka the Balaton Hot Kiss. Balatonboglár’s Tejvirág is all about real ice cream, with no plastic flavours – it’s worth giving it a lick of a chance.

Kistehén Burger Restaurant

It's clear from the name, ‘Little Cow’, what’s on offer at Kistehén, on the main street of Balatonszárszó: improbably good burgers made from all kinds of beef and other meat, inducing diners to salivate. For those looking for a little more, they also offer fresh fries, salads and soups.

Völgyhíd Kávézó

The success story of Villa Gréta in Siófok has been transported this year to a café at Kőröshegy Valley Bridge (Völgyhíd). Followers weren’t put off by the move, they just flooded here to find astonishingly delicious cakes on the edge of the village.

Halas Karcsi

If you’re talking about food outlets on the south shore, then Halas Karcsi is a big part of that conversation. For almost four decades, ‘Charlie Fish’ has been steadily placing perch or bream in paprika-flavoured flour in front of his customer. In short, for those who dream of fish, this fish is just a dream!
