Given Balaton's many chapels, observation towers and churches, castles seem to be less prominent among the sights. Szigliget has a special role though, which is why locals refer to it as Balaton Castle.
Currently, this 750-year-old monument is the only castle around Balaton that can be visited, having undergone a major renovation between September 2019 and June 2020. More work is still ongoing, with an interactive exhibition due to be installed by April 2021. Don't miss the Baroque kitchen, the Castle Chapel and the weapon exhibition in the Old Village.
The castle also has a small playground and visitors can end the day with coffee and tasty ice cream at the Várkávézó, at the foot of the castle.
